Preparation
Establish moving date and book removal firm.
- Decide who is to do the packing. If you wish to do the job yourself then book packing materials from the removal firm. Include book boxes, tea chests, or equivalent, pet carriers, portable wardrobes. Arrange the date for delivery.
- If it is to be a total DIY move, book the van.
- Organise friends, or relatives, to help.
- Start collecting old newspapers and other materials for packing.
- List all the people who will need to know your change of address, bank, insurers, credit card/HP companies etc.
- Contact all home services (gas, electricity, telephone), inform them of your move and arrange for final bills and transfer of accounts.
- If a school move is involved, inform the present one and start looking for a new one.
- Find out where your new GP, dentist, optician and other essential services are located and get registered.
- Inform your present professionals of your impending move.
- Inform friends and relatives of your impending move.
- Arrange with the post office for mail to be sent on.
- Keep in touch with your solicitor to make sure the date remains the same.
- Book kennels/cattery to accommodate pets from the day before until two or three days after the move. It is less upsetting for them and much easier for you.
- Organize a friend or relative to take care of small children on the day.
