All you need to know about sharing
Often it is necessary to look for someone to share a rented property with or to rent from an existing tenant. Here are a few points to consider when finding a flatmate.
- When you place an advertisement in the Newbury weekly News or on line only include the area in which you live, plus your telephone number. It is safer not to include your name or full address.
- When applicants call, talk on the telephone for a while and trust your instincts. Ask some prepared questions and make a note of their answers. It is important that you are happy to share your home with the successful applicant.
- When you set up a time for someone for to visit, try and make sure that you are not in the house alone, ask another flat mate or a friend to stay in with you.
- If you agree to take someone one, ask them for a reference from another landlord. You should also ask for a landline number, for example a work number and then check that they are who they say they are.
And if you are replying to an advertisement for a flat mate:
- When you go to look at a property, take someone with you. If this is not possible, leave full details of where you are going and whom you are meeting and arrange to contact someone once you have finished.
- Make sure that the property is secure and that you are happy about the safety in the area in which it is located - visit it at night as well as during the day.
- Meet and talk to all your prospective flat mates and trust your instincts when deciding whether or not to move into a property.
